Gerald “Jerry” Allyn Horn, Vietnam Veteran (U.S. Army) 82, of Chatham, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and daughter at his side on Saturday, August 23, 2025. He was born July 7, 1943, in New Berlin, to William Gerald and Helen Grace Baker Horn. He married Candy Sharp on March 26, 1965.

Jerry is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Candy, of sixty years; one daughter, Jerica (Scott) Horn-Cobern of Chatham; and granddaughter, Summer Cobern whom he loved very much; one sister, Karen Crawford of Loami; step granddaughter, Kailey Myers; step great grandson, Tatum Myers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Jim Crawford.

Jerry was a 1961 graduate of New Berlin High School and a 1980 graduate of Lincoln Land Community College with degrees in Supervisor Management and Business Management.

He was inducted into the US Army on November 16, 1966, and was stationed in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam from mid-April 1967 to mid-April 1968. In April 1968 he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, while there he was involved in the Honor Guard as Squad Leader. He was Honorably discharged from the United States Army on November 15, 1968, as a Specialist 5 (E-5).

Jerry enjoyed reading Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Every morning before he got ready, he read his “Morning with Jesus Book”. He loved attending races at the Jacksonville Speedway and watching NASCAR Xfinity racing, especially Justin Allgaier.

Jerry was loving, kind, and always praying for others.

He retired from Springfield Mass Transit, were he worked as a Bus Driver for twenty-four years and never took a sick day.

Visitation: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. Burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
