George Debus

George Lavern Debus, 87, of Sterling, passed away on June 19, 2025.

George was born Nov. 20, 1937, on the Debus Farm in Proctor, CO, to Henry Debus Jr. and Lidwina Lititia (Korbe) Debus. He graduated from Crook High School in 1956 and the University of Northern Colorado in 1960.

George began his teaching and coaching career at Crook High School. After 10 years, he continued his coaching and teaching career at Caliche High School until his retirement in 1992. George’s passion was for coaching girls’ basketball at Caliche High School, where they won 3 state championships. He was inducted into the CHSCA Hall of Fame in 2011.

He married Norma Jean Weigel on June 20, 1959. They had two sons, Robert and Bradley. After retirement, George enjoyed spending time with his wife, Norma, and tending to their lawn and roses.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lidwina, and his brother, Donald.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, and children, Robert and Bradley.
