Evelyn Marie Horgan Spina died on the evening of May 2, 2025, at her home in Sloatsburg, NY, and was 98 years young! Her beloved daughter Catherine was at her bedside. She was born Evelyn Horgan on September 30, 1926, in Hartford, Connecticut, to George Horgan and Caroline Matula Horgan. After graduating from Buckley High School, she was awarded financial assistance by the Mercy Nuns enabling her to attend Saint Joseph College where she earned a Bachelor of Science Registered Nurse degree. She received further financial assistance to attend Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, to pursue a Master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing. Her intellectual pursuits were ambushed when she met Vincent Spina at the University and they fell madly in love and were married on December 31, 1949, at Saint Denis RC Church in Yonkers, NY. They were married for over fifty (50) years and raised two children, Catherine and Michael, the eldest.
While in Hicksville, NY, in the early 1950’s, she worked the graveyard shift as an RN at Mineola Hospital for a period of time while raising her two children. She attended Hofstra University to further her interest in education, eventually earning a Masters Degree in Special Education at Hofstra with the help of a Federal Grant and a Stipend.
During this time, she also taught third grade at St. Frances De Chantal School in Wantagh, NY. She and her husband Vincent, also taught Religious Education for the Parish of Saint Ignatius of Loyola to Hicksville Junior High School students, thus deepening their Catholic faith.
Moving from Hicksville, NY, to Sloatsburg in 1970, she was interviewed and immediately hired for a position with Rockland BOCES as a Special Ed teacher for Learning Disabled Emotionally Disturbed children and after 20 years retired.
Evelyn served the people of Sloatsburg for almost 55 years in various roles as an Extraordinary Minister for the Parish of Saint Joan of Arc, as a Treasurer for the Sloatsburg Volunteer Ambulance Corps, as an Advisor for the Sloatsburg Community Development Program and a Secretary for the Pine Grove Lakes Association.
Evelyn is predeceased by her husband Vincent, who died on September 6, 2001, and her sister Dorothy Crane. She is survived by her son, Michael, her daughter Catherine Klingensmith, and grandson Michael Klingensmith (Catherine), son Magnus, grandson Brian Klingensmith (fiancé Miranda) and daughters Allison and Libby Kate, and grandson Mark Klingensmith (Mallory), and daughters Blake, Ellie and Ryan.
The visitation will be held at Edwards Funeral Chapel in Suffern, NY, on May 14, 2025, from 4:00PM – 7:00PM. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at the Church of St. Joan of Arc in Sloatsburg, NY, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 11:00AM.
