Evan Thomas Mellor peacefully passed away in the early morning of July 14th, 2025. Eighty-one years and a day old, he was surrounded by his large and loving family in his final days.
Evan was born in Rupert, Idaho on July 13th, 1944 to Francis Lawrence and Gwen Hale Mellor, the second of three sons and one daughter. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, boating and camping. He graduated from Minico High School before attending Brigham Young University. He met his wife of 59 years, Doris Booth, on a blind date on New Year’s Eve in Idaho. They were married at the Logan Temple on March 11th, 1966. Together, they were blessed with five wonderful children. Evan was particularly proud of each of his children and loved them dearly.
In his professional life, Evan was fortunate to work at the same company for 43 years through their many name changes (Sperry, Univac, Unisys, Lockheed Martin, among others), finally retiring with L3 Communications. Evan and Doris retired the same day on New Year’s Eve 2010 to fulfill their dream of living in Garden City near the serene shores of Bear Lake.
During retirement, Evan was able to return to his love of nature. He especially enjoyed spotting moose, deer, and the other wildlife around their wooded cabin. Evan spent much of his retirement observing the beauty of the world. With the help of his son Mike, he and Doris visited nearly every National Park West of the Mississippi, including Alaska and Hawaii. They traveled the backroads and explored the seas on several cruises.
Evan loved to tinker. He would work on old cars, computers and always had a project. His family could never guess what kind of machine he would bring home next. He had a special connection to his pets, and was never without an animal companion. He cherished them and would baby them. There were often more than one dog in the house, with all furry friends welcome. He also loved to sing. Though he was not a soloist, his deep voice was a special gift to those closest to him. He was an active participant during every hymn each Sunday.
Evan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his many travels, he enjoyed touring the church sites. A favorite calling was teaching primary with his wife. He adored the children and drew from his experiences as a grandpa to connect with them.
Evan is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Gwen; his brother Lawrence, and his twin daughters Janice and Jodi.
He is survived by his loving wife, his children Melinda (Dennis) Smith, Michelle (Dennis) Jackson, Michael Mellor, Jeffery (Emily Leticia) Mellor, and Amy (Nathan) Todd; his sister Mary (Steve) Carter and his brother Richard (Cathy) Mellor. He is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, the most recent born just hours after his passing.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at the Garden City Chapel, 65 S. Bear Lake Blvd., Garden City, Utah at 12:00 pm. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 11:00-11:45. Interment will be at the St. Charles Cemetery.
