HOUSTON, TX / CARENCRO, LA ~ Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in Melancon Funeral Home, Evangeline Memorial Gardens Chapel in Carencro for Eula Mary Batiste, age 78. On Thursday, October 16, 2025, Eula Mary Batiste departed this life at her home surrounded by her family for a better home in glory.
Interment will be in Evangeline Memorial Gardens in Carencro. John Batiste, Jr. will officiate at the services.
Eula was born in Port Barre, Louisiana, on March 6, 1947. She was the second daughter born to the union of Paul and Louise Shelvin. The family relocated to Houston, Texas where Eula went to school with her sisters. Eula loved spending time in the kitchen with her mother learning how to cook. Because Eula couldn’t say baby, she developed the nickname, BaeBae.
Eula met the love of her life in Houston, Texas and was married to John Batiste Sr. on November 14, 1964. They shared many years together including four children they raised in Youngsville, Louisiana. Eula accepted Christ in her early adulthood and was baptized as a Pentecostal by her uncle, Alex Shelvin, and was a member of her uncle’s church on Happiness Street for many years. She became known as a prayer warrior by many through serving the Lord and ministering to many.
Eula went on to become a housewife, cook, housecleaner, nurse’s aide, and a businesswoman. She started J. and E. Janitorial Services and private catering services. After many years in Youngsville, Louisiana, Eula and John moved back to Houston. Eula made friends with every person she came across. She was a giving woman that believed in taking care of others. She loved to go to church and serve her community. She served in her church as a Sunday School teacher for the children’s ministry, women’s ministry, and community service ministry volunteering at many nursing homes around the Greater Houston area.
Eula was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a great friend. She will be remembered for her love of God, strong family ties, and community service. She always showed up when you needed her. She loved spending time with her family cooking, especially during family gatherings and holidays. She was known for her pineapple cream cake (better than sex cake) and sweet potato pie (n** in a blanket). She loved her sisters deeply and cherished her relationship with her only daughter. During her pastime, she enjoyed watching old western movies, preferably Matt Dillon with Festus at Gun Smoke. She will be deeply missed.
She leaves in God’s care to cherish her memories: her husband John Batiste Sr., her sons John (Tracy) Batiste Jr. of Fulshear, TX, Dennis (Evelyn) Batiste of Fulshear, TX , and Chris (Regina) Batiste of Pearland, TX; her only daughter Dr. Nikki Blaze of Covington, KY; her sisters Rosemary (Richard) Shelvin Porter of Houston, TX, Delia (Pete) Shelvin-Hood of Houston, TX, and Paulette Crosby of Houston, TX; eighteen grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, and four God children; and a host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son Kirk Anthony Batiste; her parents Paul Shelvin and Louise Shelvin, both natives of Port Barre; one brother, Paul Shelvin; one granddaughter, Katia Batiste; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family requests visiting hours be observed from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until service time on Saturday.
Melancon Funeral Home, Evangeline Memorial Gardens Chapel, 4117 N. University Ave., Carencro, (337) 896-3232, is in charge of arrangements.
