Edward Thompson

Edward Alexander Thompson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community servant, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. Born on January 4, 1942, in Gretna, Florida, to Joseph Harold and Gladys Mae Presnell Thompson, Alexander grew up rooted in faith, family, and the quiet strength of his hometown.

A proud graduate of Quincy schools, Class of 1962, Alexander dedicated over 30 years of his life to the land he loved working in the small grains department with the Department of Agriculture and the North Florida Research and Education Center. His work reflected his deep respect for nature, discipline, and the value of hard, honest work.

On June 8, 1968, Alexander married Gale Yawn, the love of his life, partner in faith, and his greatest joy. Together, they raised two beautiful daughters, Malinda and Beverly, and built a life of warmth, laughter, and unwavering devotion in the communities of Quincy and Gretna.

A pillar of the Gretna Presbyterian Church, Alexander served faithfully as an elder since 1969. His presence in the church and the community was quiet but powerful never seeking recognition, only to serve. He gave his time and heart to causes close to home, including the community garden with the Shadetree Group, youth programs, collecting school supplies for schools and Second Harvest Food Bank. He believed in helping others, and he lived that belief every day.

Alexander is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Gale Yawn Thompson; his daughters Malinda (Robert) Harris of South Carolina and Beverly (Richard) Melton of Tallahassee; and his grandchildren: Robert (Stephanie) Harris and Elaine Harris of South Carolina, Marcus Melton of Jacksonville, Gabrielle (DJ) Tointigh of Tallahassee, and Nicholas (Ruby) Melton of Crawfordville. He is also survived by his great grand children Kensley, Noah, Jaxson, Ashton, Wiona, Christopher, Jasper and his brother and sister-in-law, James Harold (Carolyn) Thompson of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gladys Thompson, and his sister, Joan Thompson Mason.

Alexander lived a life of humility, quiet faith, and kindness that will echo through the generations he leaves behind. His legacy is one of service, love, and unwavering commitment to the people and places he held dear.
