EDWARD POCENGAL

EDWARD W. POCENGAL, was born on September 21, 1931, in Yonkers, NY and died on October 2, 2025, after a brief illness, at the age of 94.

During the last 35 or so years, “Eddie” split his time between Florida and New York.

Eddie was the 7th of 11 children, born to parents Catherine and Anthony who immigrated from Poland in the early 20th century. He often recalled that growing up, his house did not have hot water, and he shared a bed with two of his brothers. He was particularly proud of his time spent as a football player for the Gorton high school team, even receiving an award as MVP.

In 1951 Eddie joined the Army and was deployed to Korea, serving in the Korean war from 1951 to 1954. He was married and divorced twice, first to Nora Ryan (d. 2022) then to Joanne Pocengal. After returning from service, he worked for Stelma Corporation in Stamford, CT and then Metro North Railroad as an electrician until he retired.

Eddie spent much of his time enjoying the outdoors, kayaking, traveling and working on his sailboat, and most importantly, dancing the Polka.

Eddie is predeceased by his son, Edward ‘Ned’ Pocengal and daughter Carol Theurer. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Steckler, granddaughters Kate Theurer and Leah Steckler, and Leah’s children, Eddie’s 2 great grandsons, Jacob and Aaron Kochman. Of his 11 siblings, sisters Dorothy, Irene and Florence survive him. He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will take place on Saturday, October 11th at 11AM St. Mary’s Cemetery in Yonkers, NY with a reception to follow.
