Mendler, Edward Marcel “Eddy”
Edward “Eddy” Mendler was many things in life — a husband, father, friend — but if you asked him, he’d tell you the most important title he ever held was Opa. Being Opa wasn’t just a role, it was his calling. He passed away suddenly after a brief illness, with his family by his side, on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the age of 61. He fought the bravest battle until he simply couldn’t fight anymore.
Eddy was the beloved husband of Jenny Malcolm; loving father of Nick Mendler (Sam), Niomi Mendler (Tyler Kindt), and Adam Malcolm (Robyn); and the proud, ever-present Opa to William, Charlotte, Ewan, Marlowe, and Ashton — the five little lights of his world. Treasured son of Betty and the late Fred (2018), and dear brother to David (Jennifer) and Danny (Rose), and brother-in-law to John (Judy), Mark (Leanne), the late Kim (Don), Sandy (John), Rhonda (Kevin), Darlene (Steve). Eddy will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
If you knew Eddy Mendler, you knew laughter. You knew the sound of him calling out across a room (EI EI EI O), the sight of him showing up in costume, and the feeling that when he was with you, something special was happening.
More than anything, Eddy was Opa. That was his proudest, happiest role — and he played it like no one else could. Whether he was dressing head-to-toe as Buddy the Elf or stalking the sidewalks in full dinosaur costume, his mission was simple: make his grandkids laugh and feel loved.
His other great love was Honey Harbour. It was where he grew up, where he retired, and where four generations of his family will continue to make memories in Bayview. He and Jenny made the Shady Rest their home away from home, spending summers on their Pontoon – “M&M’s Float”, keeping the goulash day tradition alive for friends, and ending the days by the fire, grateful for the beautiful life they had built together.
Before retirement, Eddy spent over 30 years at the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Brampton, the last 22 as a forklift driver — a job he was deeply proud of. More than his work, he was known for running the coffee shop during coffee breaks, where friendships were brewed alongside the coffee. He brought the same spirit of camaraderie from the plant to every part of his life.
A lifelong Hubertushaus member, Eddy was also known at Oktoberfest circles as “Eddy von Hops n Schnapps” — a nickname earned for his love of Jägermeister, Jäger Bombs, and Apfel Schnapps with his friends. Oktoberfest was his season to shine: lederhosen on, stein in hand, laughter echoing through the hall.
A NASCAR enthusiast who chased races across U.S. tracks, a lover of cruises, passionate about music, and the life of every party — Eddy had a way of lighting up a room just by walking in. His friends and family will remember him for his generosity, his humour, and the way he made even ordinary days feel like an occasion.
A Celebration of Eddy’s life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the German Canadian Hunting and Fishing Club, 1605 Bleams Road, Mannheim. A tribute will be shared at 3:00 p.m.
Be comfortable, my love. As you wished.
