Douglas County urges preparation for weekend storm

Douglas County officials are urging residents to prepare now for the first atmospheric river of the season, forecasted to impact the region beginning Friday, October 24, and lingering through Monday, October 27.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will bring steady rainfall across much of western Nevada and the Sierra. The most significant rainfall is expected on Saturday and into Saturday evening, followed by continued showers through the remainder of the weekend.
“Residents should prepare their homes and property ahead of the storm,” said Douglas County Emergency Manager Kara Easton. “Sandbags sites have been freshly stocked across the county. As the first notable storm of the season, it’s a good reminder for residents to make sure they’re ready for winter weather.”
Weather Outlook
- Rain: Consistent, widespread rain is expected throughout the event. Because of the steady nature of the rainfall, burn scar flooding and flash flooding are not anticipated to be major concerns.
- Winds: Increased winds are likely during the storm period, but NWS does not expect damaging wind speeds at this time.
- Snow: Around 1-2 inches of snow may accumulate at lake level, while higher elevations could see 1-2 feet of snow. Travelers should plan for typical winter driving conditions and use caution on mountain roads.

All Douglas County sandbag stations are currently stocked and available for residents who wish to take precautionary measures to protect property from potential runoff. Don’t forget to bring your own shovel!
