Dorothy passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, with her beloved granddaughter Susan by her side. She was loved and supported by her whole family and will be greatly missed.
Born in Shanghai, China, Dorothy was known to be spunky, athletic and fiercely loyal, caring deeply for those she loved. At the end of World War II, and the return of her family from captivity, she was introduced to Bill, the man she would marry and build her life with.
Bill and “Doodles” (Bill’s nickname for his beloved) immigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco, CA. Dorothy worked for and retired from Mount Zion Hospital (later UCSF) as a home health care nurse. She loved her career choice, and it gave her great purpose and joy to help people during their recovery from illness or injury. In retirement she was a very active volunteer with Catholic Charities. Weekly she would serve the men of Leland House and serve the community at Saint Anthony’s Dining Room. She was also active in her parish’s Over 55 Club and enjoyed dance classes. She loved to travel and did so often. She lived independently and continued to drive until age 95.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Bill Norman; her daughter, Arlene Warren; her parents, Charles Quelch and Arima (nee Matsuyae) Quelch; her bothers William Quelch, Johnny Quelch and Edward Quelch; her sister-in-law, Anne Norman and many, many dear friends.
“Granny” is survived by her son-in-law Doug Warren; granddaughter Patty Schreiter and Patty’s husband, Lee Schreiter; great-granddaughters, Francene (nee Schreiter) Miller and Francene’s husband Matthew Miller, Jocelyn Schreiter, Diana Schreiter and Jacqueline Schreiter; granddaughter Susan McKeon and Susan’s husband, Thomas McKeon; great-grandsons, Brian McKeon, Michael McKeon and Joseph McKeon; granddaughter Tracy Loveall and Tracy’s husband, Jacques Loveall.
Dorothy’s legacy of tenacity, loyalty, love and friendship will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
A viewing and funeral service will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Anthony’s Dining Room or Catholic Charities, honoring Dorothy’s legacy of giving. Though Dorothy may no longer be with us, her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
