Dora White was born in Chicago Illinois on January 05, 1950, to the union of Jeremiah Hadden and Bane Hadden Alexander, who both preceded her in death. She attended and graduated from Hess Upper Grade Center in 1964, and Flower Vocational High School in 1968.
Dora accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church where she was baptized by Rev. James Alexander.
At a very young age Dora was given the nickname Hunchie by her father Jeremiah. He would lovingly sing out the made-up rhyme Hunchie pie Sweetie pie as a term of endearment. I’m sure Hunchie replaced Honey in the rhyme. Well, the Hunchie part stuck, and the Sweetie pie became part of Dora’s personality, because most people think of her as sweet. She was sweet no doubt, but Dora was also very competitive, and strong willed, two traits that served her well as a youth and adult.
When Dora was young, she loved to jump rope especially double Dutch. She was so skilled at double Dutch that the rope turners complained and begged for relief. As an adult Dora loved to play a card game called bid whist, in fact she considered herself as a bid whist expert who won and loved to talk trash to the opponent. But cooking in my opinion was one of her best skills. When I married young Dora 55 years ago, she was a passing C+ but baby she studied under her mother, read many cooking books, watched many cooking shows and was a world class chef at the end.
Dora performed odd jobs when she was 10 so her work history started very early. She was hired as a preteen to sell candy at the corner store and held that job until she was hired as an Operator for the Illinois Bell Telephone Company in her Junior year of high school. Illinois Bell eventually became part of the AT&T corporation. She worked several union jobs an eventually was promoted into management. She retired in 1998 with over thirty years and just 47 years old.
After Dora’s retirement she started quilting for fun and eventually became a world class art quilter winning many contest and making lots of cash. She also made quilts for friends and family for free.
I met the love of my life when she just a sweet 16 years old and I was a mature 18 and in the United States Navy during the Christmas holidays in 1966.She didn’t fall for my rap right away, but I was persistent and long story short we eventually fell in love and married August 23, 1970. We were married for 55 years but were blessed with only one son, Demond in 1972.
On August 21, 2025, the love of my life made her transition from this life and moved on to a place called heaven, where she will join other loved ones on the other side. Her beautiful smile, joyful sprit, and loving spirit will fit right in.
Dora was preceded in death by her beloved parents; three brothers, Johnnie Mack, Willie, and Eavely; and two sister-laws Brenda and Enis.
Dora will be remembered and loved by 3 sisters, Jerelina, Bane’(Cassie) and Sandra; and one sister-in-law, Bernice; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of loving friends.
