In Loving Memory of (Ret) Major David H. Gavin
David H. Gavin (Dave), beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, loyal friend, and lifelong adventurer, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 11, 2025, surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and deep devotion to his family and faith.
Born to William A. Gavin and Nora A. (Garrity) Gavin, Dave was raised in Clinton, Massachusetts, where his roots ran deep. A proud graduate of Clinton High School Class of 1962, he went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Worcester Junior College and a Business Degree from Anna Maria College—always valuing hard work and education.
At just 16 years old, Dave met the love of his life, Joanne (Garrity), then 15. Their high school romance blossomed into a lifelong partnership grounded in respect, laughter, and love. Together they raised two sons and were blessed with two cherished grandchildren.
Dave was a dedicated member of the Massachusetts National Guard, where he rose to the position of Company Commander of both the Clinton and Concord units. Among his proudest moments was welcoming President Gerald Ford during the nation’s Bicentennial Commemoration—an honor that reflected his patriotism and leadership. He was also invited to give the Memorial Day address for the Town of Clinton, a testament to his enduring service and respect in the community.
Professionally, Dave spent 38 years with Stainless Steel Coatings, helping grow the company into a national and international presence. He was admired by colleagues for his integrity and steady guidance.
A lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, an active member of the Yankee Division Veterans Association (Worcester Chapter), and a member of The Retired Friends of Greendale, Dave stayed active and connected with his community throughout his retirement. He especially enjoyed the monthly meetings at Spruce Street Tavern with his Clinton High School Class of ’62 group.
Dave’s sense of adventure was unmatched. He enjoyed camping trips, fishing, skiing, golfing, and traveling widely throughout the U.S. and abroad. In Alaska, he went whitewater rafting and panned for gold; in Montana, he took to the skies in a hot air balloon over the Grand Tetons. In Ireland, he climbed Croagh Patrick, the Holy Mountain. He visited the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel in Italy, and in Israel, floated in the Dead Sea and walked the streets of Jerusalem. No matter how far he ventured, home with family and friends was his favorite destination.
Dave will be remembered for his quick wit, gentle nature, and generous spirit. He had a gift for making others feel seen, heard, and loved. A devout member of St. John the Guardian of Our Lady Parish, the church remained a central pillar of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his sons, David and Sean; his grandchildren, Mackenzie and Mason; his brother-in-law, Joseph Halloran; his brother-in-law, James Garrity, and his wife, Jo Ann; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, William and Nora Gavin, and his siblings: William Gavin and his wife Bernice, Thomas Gavin, Catherine (Gavin) Halloran, and Anna (Gavin) Foster and her husband Howard Foster.
Calling hours will be held from 4 until 7PM on Monday, September 15, 2025 in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton, with burial to follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Lancaster.
