Dan Lockwood

Daniel Dowling Lockwood, 57, of Middle Township, passed away surrounded by dear family and loved ones on Sunday, June 22, 2025. Dan’s passing followed a courageous battle to recover after suffering a stroke and subsequent cardiac arrest in April.

Though his time with us was far too short, we take solace in knowing that Dan has been joyfully reunited with his beloved sister, Kate Lockwood, his mother, Linda Leonard, his brother, Ben Lockwood, and cherished friends and family who have gone before him.

Dan was born in rural, upstate New York and enjoyed his early childhood among the farms, pine forests, and lakes he would return to for peace and adventure throughout his life. Dan found his way to his forever home in Cape May County as a young boy. He described the transition as “coming through his parents’ divorce and mayhem.” Dan’s resilience in adversity remained constant throughout his life. He embodied strength and integrity, balanced with caring and compassion, exemplified by his unwavering dedication to those he loved.

A proud 1986 graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School, Dan spent his teenage years forging deep lifelong friendships rooted in loyalty, laughter, and adventure. Gifted with a brilliant mind and a tireless work ethic, he followed in the footsteps of his uncles, by attending Norwich University. He later transferred and graduated from Glassboro State College, now Rowan University. Dan was a dedicated and proud brother of Delta Kappa Epsilon, sharing lasting bonds with many good men in the brotherhood.

Shortly after receiving his B.A. in Accounting in 1992, Dan began his professional career at Driftwood RV, rising to the position of General Manager and playing a key role in the development and construction of Sand Barrens Golf Course and Club.

Through mutual friends, Dan met Sylvia, the love of his life. The two were married in the year 2000. Dan warmly embraced Sylvia’s daughter Megan and together, Dan and Sylvia welcomed their beloved daughter Danielle to the family. Dan loved both of his daughters deeply and found great joy and fulfillment in his role as a father. In May, Dan and Sylvia celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. A milestone that spoke to their deep, unwavering bond. They were loving partners in every aspect of their life. They were truly meant to find each other.

Dan was always a hustler and his innate entrepreneurial spirit led him to strike out on his own and establish Professional Exteriors, a respected home improvement and construction business. Dan and Sylvia made a great business team, successfully managing Professional Exteriors, several rental properties, a daycare center, lawn care business and more. He took great pride in supporting local employees and their families, always leading with humility and a deep sense of community.

With a lifelong interest in public service and a passion for good government, Dan began attending Middle Township Committee meetings in the early 2000’s. There he recognized the need for fresh ideas and more open and transparent local government. Against long odds, with the support of his family and a growing cadre of like-minded supporters, Dan created and led a grassroots movement that reinvigorated the Middle Township Republican Party and positively engaged thousands of voters.

After a narrow defeat in 2008, Dan earned a hard-fought victory with his election to Middle Township Committee in 2009. Dan made electoral history as the first Republican elected official in Middle Township in 47 years. In 2012, after the election of fellow Republican Tim Donohue, Dan became the first GOP Mayor in the Township in 74 years. He went on to serve two terms on Township Committee. Dan dedicated himself wholeheartedly to public service, building a team of committed staff and supporters who worked alongside him to improve fiscal responsibility, ensure transparency, and provide excellent, affordable services to the Township he loved so deeply.

Dan’s dedication and commitment inspired a new generation of Republican leadership. Dan served as the Middle Township Regular Republican Leader from 2000 to 2025 and was instrumental in the winning campaigns of Tim Donohue, Ike Gandy, Jim Norris and Chris Leusner.

Dan approached every challenge with a thoughtful, well-rounded perspective, always collaborating with those who shared his values and vision to ensure that the decisions made would benefit the majority of those he served. He never backed down from a righteous fight for a cause he believed in. Always seeking to serve, Dan was a dedicated member of the Middle Township Planning Board, and a volunteer youth soccer coach. Whether in office or as an engaged and caring citizen, Dan attended nearly every Township Committee Meeting. He cared less about cutting ribbons and getting his picture taken – more about doing the good work that improved the quality of life for all Middle Township residents.

To further his commitment to his community and his county, Dan went on to become the Director of Facilities and Services for Cape May County. In this important leadership role, he was able to apply his vast knowledge and experience in small business, community engagement, and public administration to continue his commitment to better government and providing great services at the lowest cost to the taxpayer.

Dan loved to play as hard as he worked. Good friends, laughter, music, and a cold beverage were never far away. He treasured the precious time spent with their daughters and their loyal dogs, first Tucker, then Moose. He also cherished the time spent with his beloved brother, Gabriel Lockwood and their shared love of life and passion for music. Often, they fondly reminisced about their adventures and happy moments with their sister, Kate.

Dan was grateful for the opportunity to connect and spend time with his nephews and nieces over the years. His heart held a special place for them all and he had so looked forward to strengthening these bonds in his later years. Dan’s father, Stephen (Sandra), was a great source of wisdom, and Dan deeply appreciated the love and laughter shared with his many aunts, uncles, and cousins over the years.

Dan was incredibly proud of his daughter, Danni, who shared his love of peg ball, soccer, hiking, and the great outdoors. Together, they enjoyed countless adventures, particularly in the stunning upstate Adirondack landscapes that Dan loved so deeply. Dan and Danni shared a fierce commitment to doing what is right, to speaking your truth and an intelligent, biting wit and sarcasm that often filled their home with laughter.

Dan Lockwood understood that life is filled with both joy and loss. He often said, “We aren’t living the American dream—we are living the American experience.” He cherished our freedoms, rights, and responsibilities, always striving to care for and serve those he loved, his community, and his country.

Dan was most happy enjoying the simple pleasures of life. He never chased fame or recognition. He treasured nothing more than time spent with family and friends on the water, trails, or slopes. He loved a cold beer or a whiskey on the rocks imbibed around a cozy bonfire with friends and family, whether in the Adirondacks or in the backyard of his Middle Township home. Also, he loved his Green Bay Packers unconditionally.

Dan’s legacy, as a man of unselfish love and unfailing integrity, will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were touched by him.

Dan’s family will receive friends on July 22nd (Tuesday) from 1:00pm until 2:30pm in St. Simeon’s by the Sea Episcopal Church, 2502 Central Ave., North Wildwood where funeral services will follow and begin at 2:30pm.
