Cody Wayne Hurtado, age 42, left this world too soon on October 3, 2025, as a result of medical issues. He was born on September 17, 1983, in Phillip, SD, the son of Clint James Hurtado and Amy Lorraine (Wiedemer) Hurtado Sowards.
Growing up, Cody’s family moved around South Dakota. His mother was a homemaker and his step-father was a road construction worker. He attended schools in Arlington, Volga and Murdo. In 1996, while living in Arlington, Cody saved his younger brother Justin when their family home caught on fire. In 1998 he went to live with his grandmother Darlene Wiedemer in Murdo, SD. He spent his time hanging out with friends, helping her at home and at the Murdo Auto Museum. He always stayed busy. In 1999 he attended Boxelder Job Corps where he obtained his GED. After Job Corps he returned to Murdo and then chose to move around a bit. In 2004, after the loss of his mother, he decided to settle in the Pierre area. He worked at WW Tire for many years where he made lasting friendships, occasionally leaving to pursue other interests.
In 2004 he met Valerie Henrickson and they had three beautiful sons together: Anthony, Jared and Landen. He loved his boys very much. He also loved his fiance Holly, who he has share the last couple of years with.
In his young life Cody made many friends. He always enjoyed hanging out with friends and family and helping people. His infectious smile and fun living personality with be remembered and missed by many. Cody also enjoyed working on his pickup trucks. He loved to make people laugh and always had a story to tell.
He leaves behind his sons, Anthony, Jared, and Landen Henrickson all of Fort Pierre, SD, his fiancé Holly Millard of Pierre, his father Clint Hurtado, his step-mother Verna Hurtado both of Sheridan, WY, two brothers: Justin (Veronica) Hurtado of Colome, SD, and Jason (Amanda) Sowards of Henry, SD, three sisters: Brandy Gattie of Fort Pierre, Heidi Sowards (Jeffrey Springer), and Lacy Sowards (Tyler Jensen) all of Sioux Falls, SD, three step-brothers: Marvin Sowards, Craig Meader and Daniel Hurtado, four step-sisters Berdina Langdeau, Anna Dennis, Marie Thayer and Amanda Hurtado, numerous nieces and nephews, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Cody was predeceased by his mother Amy Sowards, his step-father Raymond Sowards, his grandparents Wayne and Darlene Wiedemer, great grandparents Virgil and Lorraine “Bunny” Green, step-brothers Lawrence Sowards, Lenny Sowards, and Wayne Sowards, step-sisters Amy Ann Hurtado, Cindy Guffey and Marlene McGruder.
