Civil conversation in age of polarization highlights next Sierra Nevada Forum at BAC

The Sierra Nevada Forums, in partnership with the AAUW Capital Branch and League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada will host “Civil Discourse, Engagement and the Dignity Index Tool”, a panel discussion on Wednesday, March 12 at the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater, 449 W King St in Carson City.

Doors open at 5:30 pm and the program starts at 6 pm. The forums are co-sponsored by the Nevada Appeal.  This is the 10th season of free community forums on topics of current interest.

Note the venue has changed to the Black Box Theater for this Forum only.

The panelists will be Amy Pason, PhD, associate professor at UNR’s Department of Communication Studies; Jill Tolles, executive director of the nonpartisan Guinn Center at UNR and former legislator from Washoe County; and Pat Hickey, also a past assemblyman representing Washoe County, former reporter, and Reno Gazette Journal columnist.

The Dignity Index is a tool designed to measure the level of dignity in political and social discourse. It evaluates language on a scale from contemptuous and divisive to respectful and constructive, aiming to promote more civil conversations and reduce polarization.

From a practical stance, the speakers will also discuss the implication of using contempt language when it comes to policy making.  Two former state legislators will explain their experiences and call for more dialogue across the aisle enabled by remembering the dignity of even those we disagree with. By encouraging thoughtful engagement, the Dignity Index helps individuals and leaders communicate in ways that foster understanding and cooperation. Time is reserved for written questions from members of the audience.

A future forum is planned for May 13, 2025. For more information, check the SNF website: http://www.sierranevadaforums.com/.
