Charlotte Maughan
- June 3, 2025

Charlotte May Martensen Maughan passed on May 26, 2025, at age 78. She went peacefully, holding the hand of her husband of over 60 years, Monty Maughan, after many years of bravely living with Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s.
Charlotte was born in Hayden, Colorado, on December 3, 1946. She graduated from Hayden High School, majored in special education at Brigham Young University, completed a master’s in curriculum development at Weber State University, and never stopped learning. Charlotte was a lifelong teacher who impacted many students, teaching at Blanding Middle School, Midvale Middle School, Utah State Prison, Farrer Middle School, Dixon Middle School, and The Heritage Community residential treatment center. She also worked with her husband, managing Monty’s Mobile Homes, driving a pilot car, and pulling mobile homes across the West.
Charlotte joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age seventeen and often shared her conversion story and testimony. She wrote the curriculum for the Primary manuals and faithfully served as president of Young Women and Primary, frequently as a teacher, and in many other formal capacities.
Charlotte lived her life serving those in need. She was a good friend, calm in times of crisis, and often used her Emergency Medical Technician training.
Raised on the family ranch, Miller and Martensen Hereford Haven, she developed a strong work ethic early, rode herd, worked in hay fields, showed her prize-winning cattle nationally, and competed in rodeos. Her passion for riding horses led to her managing the equestrian therapy program at Heritage.
A gifted writer, Charlotte enjoyed writing poetry, essays, and short stories. She was a passionate student and teacher who loved learning, reading, and sharing her knowledge.
Charlotte deeply respected Native history and culture. She loved visiting ancestral indigenous sites, attending powwows, rendezvous, and pioneer trek reenactments. She enjoyed the mountains, geology, hiking, and always asked loved ones to bring her back a rock from their travels.
Though she lived with pain from injuries when a horse rolled on top of her as a teenager, she was quick with a joke about the pain and continued exploring, loving, and serving others. She embraced every opportunity to learn and travel, frequently telling stories of her adventures in Thailand, Jerusalem, Mexico, England, and the United States.
She was the mother of five biological children and many others she welcomed into her home and heart.
She is survived by her spouse, Lamont Wright Maughan; her children, Crystal (Kevin) Riehle, Lance Maughan, Val (Natalie) Maughan, Leta (Nathan) Greene, and Shannon Maughan; grandchildren Alex (Logan) McDermott, Harrison (Ashley) Riehle, Nicholas (Mary) Riehle, Victoria Riehle (Jon Black), Seth Maughan, Laura Maughan, Brady Robinson, Sheraya Fulton, Veronica (Kevin) Ward, Lynzi (Tom) Ostergaard, Bronson (Sierra) Ostergaard, Ethan (Nicole) Maughan, Nathaniel Greene, Ailsa Greene, McKenzie (Nick) Hale, Kenyon Maughan; great-grand children, Brayton, Dash, Sylus, Ashton, Hadley, Finn, Sawyer, Monty, Oakley; and siblings Jeff Martensen (Rita McFarlin), Marcia Jarvis, Lee (Cindy) Fulton, Rebecca (Terry) Wattles, and Vance (Janet) Fulton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elden A. and Lu Miller Martensen, and Chuck Fulton; grandparents, Arnold B. and Anna Harms Martensen, and J. Francis and May Jackson Miller; daughter-in-law, Jodie Maughan; and granddaughter Katelynn Greene.
A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 2530 W 200 S, Provo, UT 84601. A pre-memorial time to honor her will be held at 10:00 at the same location. She will be buried at Eastlawn Memorial Cemetery in Provo, Utah, at a later date.
