Carson City Sheriff’s Office warns vehicle thefts increase in winter months

As the temperatures drop and winter weather sets in, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community about the risks of leaving their vehicles running and unattended.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office sees an increase of vehicle thefts and vehicle burglaries during this time of the year.

An unlocked vehicle with keys inside is an easy target for criminal activity.

If you are warming up your vehicle in the cold, make sure you are following the law. It is illegal to leave your engine running and unattended, unless your vehicle is equipped with a remote start and the key is not in the ignition. Again, keep your vehicle secured at all times.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will continue to enforce traffic safety laws and educate the public year-round as part of their commitment to reduce accidents and save lives. Whether you’re the driver, a passenger, or a pedestrian, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to make safety on our roadways their top priority.

Please contact Sgt. Olson at solson@carson.org or 775-283-7887 if you have any questions.
