Carson City man arrested when deputies discover drug ‘chunk’ in pocket after shoplifting dry shampoo, bandaids and hair gel
- May 21, 2025

A 35-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 3200 block of Market Street for using another’s ID to avoid prosecution, possession of a controlled substance, shoplifting, and a contempt of court warrant issued July 2023.
According to the arrest report, Ernesto Perez was arrested Tuesday evening after deputies were dispatched to a local big box store on report of a petit larceny.
On arrival, they spoke with Asset Protection who stated they had decided not to pursue charges against the suspect due to the fact that the total cost of items stolen was only around $26 in value.
However, while deputies were discussing that case, the reporting deputy stated they were watching security camera footage on a live feed from the store, and witnessed a woman standing below one of the cameras.
A man was standing next to her, and the deputy observed the man holding a can of what appeared to be hairspray, before suddenly shoving the hairspray down the front of his pants.
The deputy found the man inside the store and asked him to remove the item he’d shoved down his pants. He did so, which revealed to be a can of dry shampoo.
The man provided a name with a date of birth and social security of someone else, and dispatch stated that person had returned as clear (they did not have current warrants or were under supervision).
The deputy told the man and woman they were trespassed from the store, and needed to come to the security office. While on their way to the office, the man informed deputies he had more items on his person, and began pulling them out of his clothing which included deodorant, a box of bandaids, and a small bottle of hair gel.
The woman then admitted she had a pair of white bikini swim bottoms in her purse as well.
The deputy then decided to arrest the man for petit larceny due to him having numerous items on his person, and not just the can of dry shampoo.
While searching the man, the deputy discovered his wallet contained his ID with his real name, Ernesto Perez, as well as a baggy “with a large tan colored chunk of some type of substance” inside the front right coin pocket of his pants. They also found two pieces of foil with burn marks on them within his wallet.
The man told deputies he’d given them a false name because he knew he had a warrant.
The man was taken to the hospital for medical clearance due to his possession of and possible use of Fentanyl, according to the report. Once cleared, he was escorted to the jail and booked on the above charges.
The woman was cited for petit larceny and released from the scene.
Bail: $16,637; $3,000 cash only.
Suspected possession of methamphetamine
— A 39-year-old Carson City man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance early Wednesday morning.
According to the arrest report, deputies were patrolling the area of College Parkway and Goni around 2:25 a.m. when they witnessed a vehicle driving without a working rear license plate light.
The vehicle was stopped, and deputies spoke with the driver who provided his identification and stated he’d just left a casino. While speaking with the man, deputies noted that his “jaw was clenching and moving from side to side multiple times,” and that his lips had a “white film and appeared to be excessively dry,” both of which is consistent with narcotics use according to the report.
The deputy asked the man to step out of the vehicle, and he consented to a search of his person. During the search, deputies pulled a wallet from his back pocket and asked if there was anything illegal inside.
According to the report, the man said there was “something” inside the wallet. The deputy opened the wallet and discovered a substance that was later determined to be methamphetamine.
The man was taken into custody without issue.
Bail: $2,500
