Carson City, Nev. (March 6, 2025) — The Carson City School District furthered its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of students and employees by providing a comprehensive emergency training that incorporated a student reunification exercise at Fritsch Elementary and the Mountain Vista Baptist Church across the street from the school.

Last week during the professional development time on the early release day, district administrators, school resource officers, educators and other employees from Fritsch Elementary learned about Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and were physically able to experience a student-parent reunification drill that had them role-play as students and parents.

The table-top exercise and partial-day training helped school employees identify specific protocols, roles and designated locations in the event of various emergencies.

SRP was defined as clear, common and universal language that will be used in the event of an emergency, incident or large-scale crises.

Five specific actions were identified to be performed during an incident: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter.

  • Hold is followed by the directive: “In Your Room or Area,” and is the protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear of occupants.
  • Secure is followed by the directive: “Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors,” and is the protocol used to safeguard people within the building.
  • Lockdown is followed by “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight,” and is the protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep occupants quiet and in place.
  • Evacuate may be followed by a location, and is used to move people from one location to a different location in or out of the building.
  • Shelter may be self-protection or evacuation. In a natural disaster, the hazard will be identified, and students and staff are trained in the appropriate safety strategy for a group.

SRP is a set of research-based actions/drills designed to prepare students, staff and parents for emergency situations. It is based on an all-hazards approach following the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

The NIMS guides all levels of government, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector to work together to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to and recover from incidents.
