- September 9, 2025

A 73-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of felony failing to register as a sex offender and gross misdemeanor open and gross lewdness, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.
Following an investigation, deputies arrested Charles Berton. According to the booking report, deputies were called at 2:13 p.m. to East William Street for a report of indecent exposure, with the reporting party stating the man was touching himself at Mills Park.
A deputy arrived on scene and witnessed the suspect, Berton, sitting by a tree with his shorts down by his knees and buttocks touching the grass. The deputy observed the man committing a lewd act next to the tree facing the roadway, according to booking the report.
Deputies approached the man, who pulled up his shorts. A deputy asked him if he knew why they were there. The man stated he did. Deputies asked what he was thinking of while doing that in a public park right along the road where people could see.
The man stated he couldn’t wait to get home and so he sat down next to the tree in the park. At this time, the man was placed under arrest for open and gross lewdness. The man was run through dispatch, which advised he is a sex offender. The deputy asked him when he last registered. The man stated it was 2024 in California. The man was asked how long he had been in Carson City, in which he stated five days. Bail: $5,000.
In other arrests:
— A 39-year-old Carson City man, Mario Quevedo, was arrested Monday for suspicion of possession of a gun by a prohibited person, misdemeanor trespass and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the booking report, deputies were dispatched at 9:12 p.m. to Empire Ranch Road for a subject trespassing on private property. Deputies arrived and observed Quevedo. He was cuffed, detained and checked for weapons.
While checking, a deputy felt a needle stick their index finger. The deputy asked the man if he had any needle in his pocket. The man said no. The deputy asked if he had anything illegal in his pocket. Quevedo said he did not, the report states. The deputy asked if he could take everything out of his pocket. The man told the deputy he would rather not. A deputy placed the man in a patrol vehicle and continued the investigation.
Deputies were advised of a Ring camera that the property owner said caught the man entering the property, walking through the driveway and entering a field. The property owner said they went to check their vehicle to see if any items were missing and stopped looking but knew the man had been there, the report states.
The property owner said they checked a creek on the property and heard someone walking, then saw Quevedo walking out of the field and into his driveway. The reporting party said they were unsure if the man had damaged or entered any structures on his property, the report states.
Deputies spoke with Quevedo and read him his Miranda rights. He said he did not know it was private property and did not see a gate or fence. He said he was walking on the road and ended up on the property, the report states.
The deputy then explained to the man that he felt a needle stick him, which is consistent with a syringe. The deputy told the man he would be taking everything out of his right pocket and verifying that there was no syringes in his pocket, the report states.
While emptying the man’s right pocket, the deputy located a cigarette box containing a glass pipe with crystal-like residue. The deputy asked if the glass pipe was used to smoke methamphetamine. The man said “technically.” The deputy also found a small tool, shaped like a pen with a sharp point at the end of it, consistent with the object that struck the deputy. The deputy did not locate a syringe in his right pocket.
Meanwhile, the property owner advised nothing was damaged or missing on his property and wanted to pursue charges for trespassing. The property owner said there were two entrances, one of which was the primary entrance with two gates, including one requiring a code to enter. A deputy observed all the gates, which clearly separate the public road from the residence.
The reporting party filled out a statement. The deputy recontacted Quevedo and told him he was under arrest for trespassing and would be booked on an additional charge for drug paraphernalia.
He was then searched, where the deputy located two gun rounds in his left pocket. The deputy asked him why he had ammo in his pocket. He said he found them. The deputy also located a white pull object with no markings and a small cylinder, approximately 4 inches long with copper ends. The deputy asked him what the cylinder was. The man told him he found it on the ground and put it in his pocket. He was placed back into the patrol vehicle and taken to jail. Bail: $20,000.
— A 31-year-old Gardnerville woman was arrested Monday for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $2,500.
