Carson City area weather: Valley rain, Sierra snow Wednesday and Thursday
- March 4, 2025

A moderate winter storm is expected to arrive Wednesday and Thursday bringing the potential for rain and possible light snow showers to Carson City and surrounding counties and up to a foot of snow along Sierra passes, according to the National Weather Service.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the greater Lake Tahoe area as well as southern Lyon, Mineral, Pershing and Churchill counties in Nevada and Mono, Lassen, Plumas and Sierra counties in California. Snow amounts look to generally be around 2 to 6 inches below 7,000 feet and 6 to 12 inches above 7,000 feet.
Snow levels will fall Wednesday night into Thursday morning that could allow for light snow chances for western Nevada valley floors. Slick conditions are possible for the morning commute with a rain and snow mix by the afternoon, according to the weather service.
The storm will bring windy conditions, especially along the Sierra ridges with southwest winds increasing to 50 mph to 60 mph Wednesday, shifting to northwest Thursday. For Western Nevada, there will be periods of gusty winds up to 35 mph, creating crosswind concerns, forecasters said.
Travel impacts are likely in the Sierra. Motorists can expect difficult travel conditions by Wednesday morning, worsening into Thursday as snowfall intensifies, NWS forecasters said.
In western Nevada valleys including Carson City, Carson Valley and Washoe Valley, rain will create wet roads Wednesday with the potential for slick conditions for motorists Thursday morning if snow reaches the valley floors.
