Bernice Jistel Kurtz died Thursday, October 9, 2025 at her residence in Georgetown, Texas. She was born May 14, 1930 in Milam County near the Marak Community outside Cameron, Texas to the late Adolph and Louisa (Pauler) Jistel.
She married Raymond Kurtz at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Cameron on June 14, 1947. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2024.
They made their home in Cameron until 1968 and lived in Huntsville, Texas for over 50 years. They moved to an assisted living retirement community in Georgetown in January 2022.
Bernice was active in the Raven Dulcimer Society of Huntsville, which performed for local schools, nursing homes, and community events and produced two CDs. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She retired as Walker County Deputy Tax Assessor-Collector in Huntsville after 21 years of service.
Mrs. Kurtz is survived by her son Ray Kurtz, Jr. of Temple, daughter Diane Truitt and husband Clint of Georgetown, three grandchildren Kristina Kurtz Alvarez and husband Bruce of Elgin, William J. Herring and wife Dana of Lago Vista, and Amy Herring Schroeder and husband Christopher of Canyon Lake, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters, and four brothers.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at St. Monica Catholic Church in Cameron. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Rosary at 10:30 a.m., Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial in St. Monica Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Monica Cemetery Association or charity of your choice.
