An arrest has been made following an investigation into allegations of animal abuse/neglect of horses and burros, according to the Storey County Sheriff’s Office.
On Saturday at 3 p.m., Storey County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to a Gold Hill residence to serve an arrest warrant issued by the Virginia Township Justice Court.
Deputies made contact and placed Sally Summers under arrest pursuant to the warrant on 20 counts of animal abuse/neglect and one count of resisting a public officer, according to a news release from the Storey County Sheriff’s Office.
Summers was safely taken into custody and booked at the Storey County Detention Facility, with a total bail of $20,640.
On July 4, 2025 the Storey County Sheriff’s Office responded to a remote property in for a report of possible animal abuse. Deputies observed approximately 18 horses and burros in poor health. An investigation was immediately opened.
Local horse advocacy groups and the Department of Agriculture were contacted. Coordination of resources were planned and the Storey County Sheriff’s Office assisted the property owner in providing food and water to the animals on scene.
On July 7, 2025 the Storey County Sheriff’s Office, Wild Horse Connection, and LRTC Large Animal Rescue team arrived at the property. All horses and burros were safely removed from the property and transported to Dayton where they have received veterinary care and rehabilitation.
This is still an active and ongoing investigation and further charges are pending, according to the news release.
