Annie Cheng—just Annie to everyone who knew and loved her—was born in Guangzhou, China, on September 18, 1971, and passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025, one day before what would have been her 26th wedding anniversary.
Annie spent nearly all of her adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area, and for the past 21 years made her home in Pacifica, California, with her soulmate and devoted husband, Robert Walker Scruggs. Annie brightened every room she entered—whether at work or among friends—and everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
She had an endless passion for travel and an abiding love for pandas—she would journey anywhere in the world just to catch a glimpse of them, often rearranging entire trips for the chance to see one more. Annie had a gift for turning even the smallest adventure into a memory, always curious, always smiling, always ready for the next discovery.
A gifted home chef, Annie expressed her creativity through food, filling her kitchen with the aromas of her childhood in China and the flavors she discovered on her travels. Her cooking wasn’t just a skill—it was her love language, a way of caring for the people around her. Friends and family were always welcomed with a seat at her table and a warm, unforgettable meal.
Annie is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Walker Scruggs; her sisters, Yvonne and Wendy Cheng; her brother-in-law, Anthony Cheung; her mother, Suzanne Cheng; her brothers-in-law, Thomas Collier Scruggs and Craig Lamont Scruggs; her sister-in-law, Margaret Blair Fritz; and her extended Scruggs family. She was preceded in death by her father, Son Cheng.
Annie worked in the Accounting Department at the Presidio Trust for the past 22 years, following a number of accounting positions earlier in her career—including at Ports Seafood, where she met the love of her life, Robert. She was a proud graduate of San Francisco State University, where she earned her degree in accounting—even though her heart always belonged in the kitchen.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Annie’s memory to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (https://nationalzoo.si.edu/support), her favorite place to see the pandas she adored, or to the World Wildlife Fund (https://www.worldwildlife.org), in support of global panda conservation.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her, but none more than her Pumpkin—Robert.
