Alan Proctor Nowell (85) known as Uncle Ollie to his many nieces and nephews passed away April 19, 2025. He was the son of the late Frederick N. Nowell and Barbara (Packard) Nowell of Andover, Massachusetts. Alan was pre-deceased by his siblings David Nowell, Audrey Tarpy, Judy Camasso, Frederick Nowell, Peter Nowell and Diane Watson.

He is survived by his wife Connie, son Christopher and his wife Juliet and daughter Samantha of Miami, Florida, son Dana and his wife Jessica and sons James and Andrew of Newington, New Hampshire.

Alan lived in Andover, Massachusetts until he graduated Punchard High School in 1958. After high school, he moved to Miami to enter the University of Miami completing one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Nancy, France for three years. While there he worked his way to Sergeant and saw a great deal of Europe when he had leave time. After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he returned to UM working various jobs to complete his studies and received a degree as an English Major and Philosophy Minor.

In 1967 Alan began working for Woody Kepner Associates where he met his wife Connie of 55 years. At the time Woody Kepner was one of the largest public relations agencies south of New York. As an account representative he worked on the Miami Boat Show, 7-Eleven Stores, Miami Jai-Alai Fronton, Leigh Acres and many others. Alan was able to take advantage of new opportunities with Long Advertising as a junior partner and the International Italcombio Group in advertising and public relations. Italcombio at the time was the worlds largest distributor of gold and silver. Alan always enjoyed doing home repairs for the family and friends when ever possible. He enjoyed it so much he started his own business called Gables Handyman which led into his last company job with South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union as Superintendent of seven buildings. He was employed with the Credit Union for over 25 years and retired in 2008.

During the time his sons were young he was a Boy Scout leader of Troop 23 from 1983-1996. He helped many young boys work toward achieving the highest award of Eagle Scout, including his sons Chris and Dana. In 1996, with the help of Mrs. Kaatje Bernabei, he reestablished Explorer Post 1, a coed high adventure and public service group for older scouts. During this time, summers were spent hiking the Appalachian Trail, trips to Minnesota-Canada Boundary Waters, Maines Allagash and Penobscot Rivers, and hiking the Chilkoot trail in Alaska. Along with too many canoe trips to count in Florida he completed the 99 mile Everglades Wilderness Waterway. Post 1 public service included clean up and rebuilding after hurricane Andrew and Hurricane George. They also helped Salvation Army with many projects including feeding the recovery workers at the Value Jet crash site in the Everglades. Alan also served as the Assistant Scoutmaster for the South Florida Council Contingent to the 1993 Boy Scout National Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.

After retiring, his love for the outdoors took him to be a leader with the Sierra Club taking groups hiking in the Everglades. Alan and his sons also had a collection of antique engines which they would take to the Harvest Festival at the Dade County Youth Fair. They were also shown at the Redland Fruit and Spice Park and the Florida Flywheeler Antique Engine Club in Ft. Meade, Florida.

Our family would like to thank his special ladies Carlotta and Yashima for their tender loving care this past year as well as Oasis Memory Care Staff.

No services are planned. Alan is to be cremated and he will start a new journey as his ashes will be spread in his beloved Everglades and Appalachian Trail at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Parkinsons Foundation, the Smile Train a charity for children who are born with cleft palates, or the charity of your choice.
