Wilbert F. Wendt, 85, of Clarence, passed away at UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Clarence with Rev. Matt Schneider-Adams officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. also at the church. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery with military rites.

Wilbert was born March 9, 1937, in Clinton, Iowa, to Jurgen and Anna Nicholsen Wendt. He married Betty Collins on May 7, 1966, at St. John’s in Clarence.

He is survived by his wife Betty; children Paula (Howard) Burnett of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Wilbert Jr. (Mary) of West Liberty, Tina Wendt of Cedar Rapids, and Justine Daisy of Tipton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Larkey of Mechanicsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother in-law Dorothy and Lawrence Brockhohn; and brother in-law Bill Larkey.

Wilbert served his country in the Army during the Berlin Crisis. He was a lifelong farmer but also worked at West Liberty Foods for 24 years. He enjoyed his farming, spending time playing various games with his family, and watching Iowa Hawkeyes basketball. In his earlier years he liked to play Santa for the town of Clarence and also go to dances with Betty. Wilbert also was a member of the Clarence American Legion post 286.

He was a hard worker and loved to visit with family and friends. He never knew a stranger and had a very tender and compassionate spirit.

He loved his family and his life. He brought a lot of joy, fun, and laughter to his family. He will live in their hearts forever.
