Benjamin Franklin Cruz Sr., affectionately known as Ben, left a legacy of warmth and laughter when he passed away on June 5, 2025, in Renton, WA. Born on December 18, 1932, in the small town of Lingle, WY, Dad’s life was one of dedication, service, and boundless love. His journey came to a peaceful close at the age of 92, surrounded by his loving family.
Dad’s early years were spent in Wapato, WA, where he graduated from Wapato High School in the class of 1952. His sense of duty and patriotism led him to serve his country in the Army during a pivotal time, stationed in Daegu, Korea from 1953 to 1954. Upon returning home, Dad began a long and fulfilling career with Bethlehem Steel Corp., where he worked as a storeroom clerk from October 1955 until his retirement in February 1991. Never one to remain idle, Dad continued to contribute his talents to Alaska Airlines as a material control clerk until April 1996.
Throughout his life, Dad was an avid sports enthusiast and community contributor. His passion and love for sports combined seamlessly as he coached Little League Baseball and Soccer and also served as a football coach. In later years, he also refereed soccer games. Golf was another of Dad’s joys, and he was often seen at Elk Run Golf Course, performing his duties as a golf marshal with his characteristic smile and laughter.
Dad was a man whose presence could light up a room. Described as loving, funny, and friendly, he made friends easily and maintained them for life. His laughter was infectious, and his ability to find humor won him the affection of many.
Family was the cornerstone of Dad’s life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary C. Cruz. The love and values they shared are carried on through their children: Theresa (Greg) Coleman, Laura (Tom) VanSteenvoort, Tom (Michelle) Cruz, and Ben (Anne) Cruz. His legacy continues through his 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, each reflecting a strong bond and love of family.
Dad will be deeply missed, but his memory will remain for all who had the privilege of knowing him. Dad’s laughter has not faded; it echoes in the stories shared, the lives he touched, and the hearts he warmed.
The family would like to thank the Chateau Valley Center Retirement Community staff and administration for their loving care and dedication to our Dad.
