William E. Powell

William (“Bill”) Powell, 80, of Yorkville, Illinois, beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, and uncle, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.  He was born December 7, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Gilbert and Mary (Surdel) Powell.  Bill was raised in Crete-Monee and attended Tri-State College where he earned an electrical engineering degree.  He married Kirby McMillion on February 17, 1968.   In 1966, Bill was hired as an engineer at Commonwealth Edison, completing his 31-year career in 1997 as Operations Superintendent.

Upon retirement, Bill dedicated himself to civil service and philanthropy, serving as Yorkville Treasurer for several terms. Bill was especially passionate about his volunteer work at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry, where he warmly welcomed clients, snuck treats to children, and organized backpack school supply drives.  He also indulged his passion for golf by working as a ranger at Fox Bend and Phillips Park Golf Courses.  He was an accomplished pool and ping pong player who enjoyed thrashing his children, as well as their friends who visited his home.  Bill will be remembered most for the way that he cared for those around him, including his family, scores of neighbors and friends, and the many others who looked to him as a father figure in their lives.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kirby, his two daughters Erin (Greg) Jourdan, Kelly (Mike Nawrot) Powell, his son Michael (Melissa Barreiro) Powell, his grandchildren, Ben Jourdan, Anna Jourdan and Olivia Powell, his brothers Robert Powell and Richard Powell, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kendall County Community Food Pantry, kccfoodpantry.org.
