William Louis “Bill” Gauger, 96, of Iowa City passed away on October 1, 2024. To celebrate his life, a memorial gathering for friends and family will be held Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where a time of sharing will begin at 3:00 PM.
William was born on February 25, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri to E.V. and Evelyn (Wissmath) Gauger. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1951. He earned his second BA in engineering in 1959.
He married Carole Gjerde on December 22, 1951, and together they enjoyed 72 years of marriage.
After moving to Iowa City in 1965, Gauger worked for Peterson Engineers, later starting Gauger Engineering where he worked as an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer until retirement.
Bill was active in the New Horizons Band, ceasing to play his tuba with the band when he could no longer read musical notes due to macular degeneration. Bill was involved with the Optimists Club. He loved Christmas time and sold Christmas trees every year. He collected model trains of all sizes, enjoyed going fishing, and loved puttering in his workshop while listening to opera. Actively involved as a Friend of Bill’s, he sponsored many people on their journey of recovery.
He is survived by his wife Carole Gauger of Iowa City, son David Gauger (Ann Goodenberger) of Tacoma, WA, daughter Ann Gauger of Boston, MA, daughter-in-law Beth Gauger of Iowa City, grandchildren Peter Gauger (Jenny), Alex Gauger (Tahsin) and MacKenzie Gauger, and great grandchildren Heidi, Sam, Rumi and Raina.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, son Mark Gauger, and sister Joan.
