Wayne Jackson, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion. Private funeral service will be held at Creekside Bible Church in Marion, with Pastor James Perry officiating. Interment will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Wayne was born on Nov. 21, 1936, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Virgil and Gwendolyn (Scott) Jackson. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, and went on to graduate from Coe College with a degree in teaching. On Jan. 25, 1958, Wayne was united in marriage to Janet Mae Boyle in Cedar Rapids. He was an elementary physical education teacher for 34 years and served as Marion playground director for 12 years. For 22 years, Wayne detasseled corn during the summers, involving over 1,000 kids. He announced and supervised athletic events, coached girls’ basketball and drove school bus. Wayne ran 9 marathons and 75 races. He attended Creekside Bible Church and loved gospel music and sang in choirs, quartets, and with the Cedar Rapids Symphony. Wayne enjoyed being with his grandchildren and family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Wayne is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Janet Jackson of Cedar Rapids; children, Natalee (Aaron) Uran of Apple Valley, Minn., Roxanne (Steve) Ross of Alburnett, Iowa, and Doug (Jennifer) Jackson of Winterset, Iowa; grandchildren, Jill Ramsey, Justin Uran, Stephanie Vos, Audra Klinkner, Mitchell Ross, Samantha Leng, Brittany McClain, Alexis and Jordan Jackson, and Jack and Jessica Hannon; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister, Roseann Devening of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Jackson; and parents, Virgil and Gwendolyn Jackson.

A memorial fund in Wayne’s name has been established.
