Vince was born the fourth of 13 children to Harold and Marie (Bigge) Schulte, Nov. 22, 1942, at his family’s farm in Watkins. He graduated from Norway High school in 1960. He married his wife Karen Sue Allison, July 8, 1963, passing just shy of their 60th wedding anniversary.
He grew up with a love of cars, his turquoise ‘58 Chevy, his favorite. After high school, he ran two service stations, one in Norway and one in Cedar Rapids. His station in Norway was the local hang out for budding Norway baseball players. He finished out his career at Bob Zimmerman Ford, where he worked for 28 years in the used car reconditioning department.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; seven children, Allyson, Vance (Brandon and Haley) of Norway, Chad and Crystal of St. Louis, Mo., Justin and Tara (Kenadi, Kaylor and Kooper) of New London, Vaughn and Shelley (Vaughn Jr. and Lily) of Walford, Kodi (Karli, Korbin and Amin) of Batesville, Ark., and Shalae and Sean Patrick (Tyler and Turner) of Tiffin; three great-grandchildren, Shaylea, Kaycey and Kaden. He is also survived by his brothers, Arnold, Nick and Buddy (Renate), all of Amana; sisters, Ceil (Wayne) Becker of Marshalltown, Ann (Walt) Oakley of Libertyville, Ill., Jolene (Frank) Randall of Ames, Christine (Larry McDowell) Volz of Cedar Rapids, Brenda (Tim) Kapucian of Keystone and Valerie (SueAnn) Schulte of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Steve (Kaylene Dage) Allison of Estero, Fla.; sister-in-law, Becky (Tom) Cranston of The Villages, Fla.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Alan Schulte; sisters, Susan Schulte and Janice Tranberry; and his in-laws, Orville and Geraldine Allison.
Vince’s lap was a favorite for all his kids and grandkids growing up, especially when you needed to get a baby to sleep. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan, who spent many years driving across the country watching his sons and daughters play ball. When his kids were done playing, he spent years driving the bus for Justin’s college baseball teams, a favorite of all the players. Over the years if you couldn’t find him at home, he would be delivering The Gazette, mowing the lawn at home or his parent’s farm, moving snow for neighbors or working the diamond in Norway for the town team. In August he will be inducted posthumously, along with his wife, into the Norway Baseball Hall of Fame.
The family would like to thank the kind and amazing nurses and staff at Colonial Manor, Lakeview Village, and Essence of Life Hospice in Amana for their wonderful care during Vince’s last several months.
