Verna L. Pierce, 64, of Cedar Rapids, IA, died on August 3, 2024, at her home in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Verna was born on September 8, 1959, in Cedar Rapids, IA, the daughter of Carl V. and Eleanor J. (O’Brian) VanTasell. She grew up on a farm near Rowley, IA, and was a 1977 graduate of Jefferson High School in Independence. She continued her education at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. On January 14, 1978, Verna married Michael A. Pierce at the First United Methodist Church in Rowley, IA. Together they had a son, Allen, and made their home in Cedar Rapids, IA. Michael died in 1979.

For several years Verna worked as an Accounts Manager at Williams Fasteners and later as an Accounts Receivables Specialist for GE Finance, both in Cedar Rapids. While working for Williams Fasteners Verna was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. She spent several years in and out of hospitals for treatment, and for the rest of her life she was aware of everything that could affect her health.

Verna loved her family and worked hard to provide for her son. She loved being called Grandma and caring for her grandchildren. They took many day trips around Iowa. They had many good days together, that usually ended in a meal or ice cream. Many memories were made and laughter was shared in the car.

In her free time, Verna enjoyed making things. She spent countless hours crocheting, crafting, and painting. When looking at her artwork you could see all the love and time she poured into it. She often gave away her artwork to close family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Eleanor VanTasell, Cedar Rapids, IA, her son, Allen (Tonya) Pierce, Marion, IA, three grandchildren, Roman Pierce, Ayla Pierce, and Hunter Hoffman, her aunts and uncles, and many cousins.

Verna is preceded in death by her father, Carl VanTasell, her husband, Michael Pierce, and a brother Vinton VanTasell.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Rowley, IA. Burial will be held at the Rowley Cemetery. Visitation will be held for an hour before the church service.
