Thomas W. Runyon, 72, of Riverton, died at 4:14 pm, Friday, April 2, 2021 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born December 8, 1948 in Springfield to Willard and Anna Frances Saner Runyon and they preceded him in death. He married Sally Harvel on June 15, 1984, and she survives.
Also surviving are four children: Dana (Alex) Lyons of Springfield, Pam (Steve) Kerber of Rochester, Thomas J. (Rebecca) Runyon of Riverton and Alicia (Dave) Nevlin of Jerseyville, thirteen grandchildren: Jordan (Anna) Lyons, Jennifer (Nick) McCarthy, Jarrod Lyons, Stephanie (Chris) Spangler, Paxton Keber, Courtney (Molly) Hartke, Jordan Nevlin, Logan Nevlin, Chace Tallman, Cole Tallman, Camden Tallman, Carson Nevlin and CJay Nevlin, eight great-grandchildren: Casen, Beau, Caidynce, Cashton, Caffrey, Cross, Addison and Bella, one brother, Michael (Vicky) Runyon of Springfield and several nieces and nephews.
Tom is a U.S. Army veteran. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant (E6) and served as a Platoon Leader from 1970-1971. He received the distinguished graduate award after graduating first in class at Noncommissioned Officer Candidate School in Ft. Benning, GA. He worked as a civil engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation and after retirement was the Supervisor of Clear Lake Township.
He was a member of Riverton Christian Church and was on the board of the Riverton Athletic Club. He enjoyed playing golf, solitaire, and fishing.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. A second visitation will be held from 9:30 – 10:15 am, Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Riverton Christian Church.
Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Riverton Christian Church with Pastors Brian Atwell and Charlie Carver officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to Family Wishes c/o Clear Lake Township.
