Terry R. Housman, age 87 of Marengo, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Compass Memorial Hospital, Marengo.

Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 27, 2024, First United Methodist Church, Marengo, with Brad and Brooke Hillebrand officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M., Saturday, July 27, 2024, at First United Methodist Church, prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date in the Marengo Cemetery.

Memorials may be contributed to the Iowa Valley of Marengo schools, First United Methodist Church of Marengo, or Compass Memorial Hospital in Marengo. Kloster Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Terry R. Housman was born January 14, 1937 in Grinnell, Iowa the son of Harvey and Hazel (Rinnan) Housman. He received his education in the Gilman Consolidated Schools and graduated from Gilman High School in 1956. Terry attended Central College and the University of Iowa, earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education and administration. Terry and Ardith Mairs were married on June 8, 1958 at the Gilman Community Church, in Gilman. He was a teacher and Elementary Principal for the Iowa Valley Community Schools. He also served as the Girls Basketball Coach. Terry retired in 1996 after 35 years in the educational field. Later Terry was a bus driver, and worked at Capper Auto.

Terry was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marengo, where he served as a trustee. He served on the Marengo City Council and as mayor. He was active in the community with 4-H activities, coaching, school activities, the Marengo Golf Club and board, along with the Hawkeye I Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and playing bridge. He was an avid Hawkeyes fan and also spent time showing his hunting dogs. In later years he was known for riding his scooter around town to visit all his friends and favorite haunts.

But most of all, Terry loved his family and enjoyed spending time making memories with them.

He is survived by his wife Ardith; his children Debra Malloy (Chuck) of Cedar Falls, Greg Housman of Marengo and Jeff (Cheryl) Housman of DeWitt; seven grandchildren; Chase Housman (Jodi) of Van Horne, Ashlea (Chad) Cronbaugh of Marengo, Ryan Malloy of LaPorte City, Brooke Hillebrand (Brad) of Cedar Falls, Chad Malloy of San Diego, CA, Cole Housman (Audrey) of DeWitt, and Grant Housman of Bettendorf; nine great-grandchildren, Rynlee, Raelyn, and Cayson Cronbaugh of Marengo, Mickey, Mallory and Jack Hillebrand of Cedar Falls, Emma and Liam Housman of DeWitt, and Olivia Housman of Van Horne. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Jolene McIlrath of Laurel, and Mary Conner of Des Moines; and nieces and nephews Shelly, Sam, Joy, Jamie, Todd and Tim.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws Raymond and Dorothy Mairs; sister-in-law Pam Long, brother-in-law Harold McIlrath, niece Sara Wattonville, nephew Tedd Long and great-granddaughter Elise Catherine Housman.
