Terry Lee Brosh, 76, of Solon, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2023, in his home following a lengthy battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2023, at Brosh Chapel. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.
Terry was born Nov. 27, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, son of Robert and Shirley (MacGregor) Brosh. Terry spent his youth growing up on 16th Avenue in the heart of the Czech Village and spending as much time as possible at their family cabin in Sutliff.
Terry is survived by his wife Christine, sons Justin Brosh (Tiffany), Pinellas Park, Fla., and Matthew Brosh, Gillette, Wyo.; grandchildren Austin Brosh (Hannah) and daughters Oakley and Breeze, Statesboro, Ga., Ashton Brosh (Juliana) and daughter Colbie, Hanscom Air Force Base, Boston, Mass., Brooks Brosh, Metter, Ga., Cameron Brosh and Tristan Brosh, Savannah, Ga.; mother-in-law Jane Cox, Mount Vernon, brother-in-law Dan Cox (Teresa), Mount Vernon; nephews Ben Klaus and sons Leroy and Hector, Mount Vernon, Ryan Cox (Kathleen) and daughter Adeline, Cedar Rapids, and Bryce Cox (Amanda) Cedar Rapids. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, father-in law Don Cox, and niece Megan Klaus.
Terry graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1964 and continued his education at Winona State University. In 1967 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a corpsman in Vietnam. Following his discharge, and much to his parents’ dismay, he enrolled in the San Francisco School of Mortuary Science, continuing the Brosh family tradition as the fourth generation. Following graduation he returned to Cedar Rapids, working with his father in the family business, Brosh Chapel.
The spirited working relationship between Bob and Terry (two very strong-willed Czechs) was only enjoyed a short time due to Bob’s passing in 1982 at which time Terry purchased the family business from Shirley and operated it until his retirement in 2009.
Terry and Christine Cox were united in marriage on Oct. 10, 2003. They enjoyed amazing travel experiences and kept gravitating back to southwest Florida, where they eventually purchased a home and lived in Cape Coral, Fla., for 11 years before returning home to Solon in 2018. Never one to sit still, even in retirement, Terry studied and obtained his captain’s license and did fishing charters, taught vacationing novice boaters how to navigate the waters and managed a commercial real estate property. They hosted many guests and there were lots of neighborhood dinners on the lanai. The enduring friendships and all their time spent on the Gulf waters will be forever cherished.
Terry was an avid outdoorsman from Alaska to Florida and many stops in between. His cabin in Wyoming was a second home where family and friends gathered through the years and tales were told.
He was a founding member of Iowa Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, founding member of Sutliff Bridge Authority and past board member of National Czech & Slovak Museum, Czech National Cemetery, Hospice of Mercy and Stone Academy, and volunteered his time with many other organizations.
Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the love and support we have received from friends and family these past months and special thanks to Dr. Gerke, Kelly and their amazing team at UIHC Pulmonology, Solon Fire Department EMTs and Iowa City Hospice – Wendy, Jaime and Emily – you are truly angels among us.
