Of Hebron

Steven Fritsch was born November 2, 1954 in Buffalo, New York to Johann and Jean M. (Hermann) Fritsch.  He passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 11, 2023 at Mercy Walworth Hospital in Lake Geneva.

Steven “Huggy Bear” Fritsch , 68, was a loving and dedicated husband of 42 years to Brenda, father to son, Brandon, and two daughters, Valerie and Jolene. His love for his family was endless and he beamed with joy talking about his children. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and gardening, but Steve was not just a fisherman, but a true fisher-of-men. He was grateful for his career as a 25 year Journeyman Electrician of the IBEW Local 150.

Though he grew up a scrappy kid from Chicago, his fondness for horses led him to the Wisconsin countryside at age 19 where he chased his dream of raising thoroughbred race horses. Some of his cherished horses crossed the finish line at Arlington Park racetrack to become stakes winners. Quite an accomplishment for the “average” man but Steve was anything but “average.”

Steve drove through life with a fiery passion and love for Jesus. He was deeply compassionate, a giver of his time and self, and easily touched by the needs of others. He cared about the souls of all and watered his garden in tears on his knees. One of his greatest loves and shining gifts was bringing people together. His yearly Superbowl parties and fabulous cooking made his heart known; just ask anyone about his authentic German Potato Salad.

Steve’s commitment and devotion extended to his nearly 31 year membership at Mt. Zion Christian Church and 27 years of teaching at Mt. Zion House Rehab. It was there Steve was affectionately christened and known by all as “Huggy Bear”; if you met Steve once, you were a friend for life and always got a bear hug. These cherished embraces will be remembered by many and we find comfort in thoughts of his loving legacy and him rejoicing in heaven with his Maker.

Steven is survived by his wife Brenda (Dasher) Fritsch, whom he married on June 6, 1981 in Lake Villa, Illinois; his children Brandon Fritsch, Valerie Fritsch, and Jolene (Gabriel Ferrer) Fritsch; as well as a nephew Kevin Tetzlaff and nieces Monica Nelson and Nicole Tetzlaff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Susan Schlosser and Cathy Fritsch.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Mt. Zion Christian Church, 2330 Hwy 120, Lake Geneva from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM.
