Steven James Hiles
- March 1, 2022
Steven James Hiles left this world to enter his eternal home with his Heavenly Father on February 22, 2022. Steve was born in North Chicago, Illinois on October 26th, 1956 to parents Wilbur Earl Hiles and Mary Jane Hiles, and became the eldest brother to David Paul Hiles and John Phillip Hiles. He attended Beardsley Elementary, Northside Junior High School, then Elkhart Central High School. He and his family were involved members of Osolo Missionary Church where Steve was an impeccable Bible Quizzer. He went on to pursue his Bachelor’s Degree at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana where he graduated in 1979 before moving to Austin, Texas.
After moving to Austin, he joined Hyde Park Baptist Church where he was a member of the Kinsman Gospel quartet that sang often in the church. After admiring his voice for several years from afar, Malinda Ann Simmons was introduced to Steve in February 1986. The two were married at First Baptist Church of Hurst on June 13, 1987, and began their lives together as husband and wife.
In April 1992, they welcomed their first son, Kevin Michael, into the world. Shortly after, in August 1993, their 2nd son, Collin James was born. In April 1998, their family was complete when their daughter, Kathryn Michelle was born. His family’s life was filled with joy. Countless camping trips. Weeks at Lake Texoma. Trips to Colorado to visit NaNaw and Pop. Trips to Indiana to visit Grandma Jane and Papaw Hiles. “Lucky Days.” Birthday Breakfasts in Bed. Dates with Katie. Election Day Ham. Vacations to Disney, Galveston, and many state parks. Lots of hugs, laughs, and love flowed through their lives with Steve and Malinda at the center of it all.
One of Steve’s greatest passions in life was his relationship with God. He and Malinda raised their family at First Baptist Church of Hurst where he was an enthusiastic member of the choir, praise team, and many productions during their membership there. He also loved teaching Sunday School which he did for many years. He constantly pointed his family to God and instilled in his children the desire to grow each day in their personal relationship with Jesus.
In the Fall of 2018, Steve and Malinda moved to Granbury, TX to be closer to Malinda’s family. He cherished their time there as much as anything, as he saw how happy it made Malinda.
On the evening of February 22, 2022, Steve was made whole and healthy as the Lord called him home. His family is so thankful that all of the pain, struggles, and burdens of life here on earth no longer weigh him down as he is at the foot of our Father’s throne, praising and worshiping His Holy Name, forever.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Hiles, and his brother, John Hiles. He is survived by his mother, Mary Jane, his brother, David and his wife Ellen, his loving wife Malinda, his son Kevin and his wife Rachel, his son Collin and his wife Kendall, his daughter Katie, and his granddaughter Tatum.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on March 12, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Hurst, located at 1801 Norwood Drive Hurst, TX 76054. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Steve’s name to the First Baptist Church of Hurst Music Ministry, as music greatly impacted his life.
