Cedar Rapids

Steven A. Yuza, 79, of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully of natural causes on Nov. 28, 2023. Services will be held at St. George Orthodox Church with visitation on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. and funeral held Monday, Dec. 4 at 10 a.m.

Steve was born June 4, 1944 in Cedar Rapids to Arnold and Margo (Huff) Yuza. He was a 1962 graduate of Jefferson High School before continuing his education at Upper Iowa University, graduating in 1967, Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University), graduating in 1971, as well as the University of Iowa, graduating in 1985. He then began his career as a science teacher, retiring from Cedar Rapids Prairie in 2002 after 35 years. During this time he also coached high school baseball and junior high basketball. After retirement, Steve worked at Cedar Rapids Toyota as a shuttle driver.

In 1968, Steve was united in marriage to Linda David and their marriage was blessed with two children, Kelly and Chad. He was a devoted father and grandfather and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. For many years the family would go to Wisconsin Dells and always looked forward to the trips. Steve loved to go to the casinos, including an annual guy’s trip to Las Vegas with his son, Chad and other relatives. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, especially #7 Mickey Mantle, and played many years of slow-pitch softball. He enjoyed traveling to car shows. Steve’s favorite foods were Maid-rite’s, Pagliai’s and kolaches. He thoroughly enjoyed his “grand-dog” Yogi, spoiling him with treats and toys. Steve ran into someone he knew everywhere he went and always knew their whole life story before they parted. He especially loved meeting with past students and catching up on their life stories. He was a dedicated and active member of St. George Orthodox Church.

Those left to cherish Steve’s memory are his wife of 55 years, Linda; children Kelly (Dean) Sachtschale of Cedar Rapids, and Chad (Tara) Yuza of Minneapolis; and grandchildren Austin Sachtschale and Madison and Zach Yuza as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold and Margo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George Orthodox Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at Westridge, Wolfe Eye Clinic, Dr. Melanie Stahlberg and Mercy Medical Center for their care for Steve.
