Sparrows Point girls basketball downs Perry Hall, 56-31, behind 30 points from Nyah Hazelton

Sparrows Point girls basketball got big nights from Nyah Hazelton and Vivian Windisch as the Points beat Perry Hall, 56-31, at home to improve to 7-1 this season.

Hazelton scored 30 points in the big win and Windisch backed her with 11. The two said the offense was clicking Friday against a Gators team that entered the week undefeated before dropping its first game Wednesday to Pikesville.

“Just being really aggressive,” Hazelton said as a key. “I think we do really well communicating, making sure that everyone is together, knowing your spots and sharing the ball, looking at the open person and not being selfish.”

Windisch echoed her teammate, noting the need to feed a hot hand.

“I feel like if one of your teammates is in a roll scoring points, I feel like you should just feed them the ball until they [cool] down,” Windisch said. “You just feed the ball to the person on fire.”

And Hazelton was indeed on fire in the first half.

She scored 22 of the team’s 30 first-half points alone as the Gators had no answers for her defensively. Hazelton knew she caught fire after scoring a layup on a fast break screaming “And one” when she was fouled after the shot.

Pointers head coach Tom Feazell was proud of how his team played, saying that this was one of their “most complete games” of the year.

“We’ve had ups and downs and I thought that the girls really did a great job of implementing stuff we’d worked on in practice, and they put it together and played a complete game,” Feazell said. “We played our best game of the year tonight.”

Despite being down by 35 points at one point in the game, the Gators still had some fight left in them, getting a few turnovers and going on a 12-2 run in the end.

Even though the Pointers were leading by a large margin, they did end up slowing down the pace, but for good reason in the mind of Feazell.

“I mean, at the end of that game, when you’re up like that you’re trying to play different lineups and you’re trying to get players that don’t normally play some minutes,” said Feazell.

Feazell wanted to make sure that the players that are not on the court as much had some play time.

“Against a good team, that’s great experience for players that are younger that want to get better, that are looking to improve that maybe don’t get to see the court as much.”

Both Hazelton and Windisch said that they were “very happy” about the win.

“I feel like this was the best game we played as a team,” Windisch.

Hazelton added that the team should definitely “carry this energy to the next game” moving forward.
