Shirley Spading Karrar, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, May 12, 2023, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, May 15, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church by Pastor Bonnie Koeppen. Burial: North English Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Monday after 10 a.m. prior to the service. Teahen Funeral Home and Cremation is serving the family.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Art; son, Michael (Cindy) Spading; daughter, Kris (Randy) Terrell; son, Rob (Carolyn) Spading; step-children, Karen (Steve) Pine, and Kathy Karrar; grandchildren, Jonathan, Matthew, Ethan, Jason, Tiffany, Jeffrey, Greggory, McKinley, Kendall, Spencer and Nathan; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert; her parents; grandparents; and brother, Leroy.

Shirley was born on Jan. 7, 1938, in Columbus Junction, daughter of Adolph and Edith Axtell Hals. She graduated from North English High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids. She started her career at St. Luke’s and then worked as a school nurse for Benton community schools. She later returned to St. Luke’s as a nurse manager of 3 Center, retiring in 2001.

Shirley married Robert Spading on Oct. 5, 1958, he passed away in 1990. She later married Jacob Art Karrar 2004. Shirley enjoyed fishing, traveling and mushroom hunting, but her greatest joy was spending time with family. She was forever the caretaker throughout her life and easily made friends wherever she traveled or lived, many becoming best friends.
