Shirley Jean German, 86, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at CountryHouse Residence in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa, with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:30 a.m.
Shirley was born on November 5, 1937, in Greeley, Iowa, the daughter of Evlon and Ethel (Wall) Schanbeck. She was a 1955 graduate of Manchester High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Melvin LeRoy German on September 4, 1957. To this union were born three children, Dennis, Vicki, and Melanie. Shirley retired from St. Luke’s Hospital after working in the Medical Records department for over 30 years. When not working, Shirley enjoyed dancing, playing computer games, traveling, and going for drives. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Melanie (Chris Perdue) German; son-in-law, Dennis Steffes; son, Dennis (Jillian) German; two grandsons, Alex Steffes and Eric (Brie) Steffes; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Evlon and Ethel Schanbeck; husband, Melvin German; daughter, Vicki Steffes; sisters, Evelyn Feally and Margie Main; and father and mother-in-law, Jerome and Lillian German.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of CountryHouse Cedar Rapids and Hospice of Mercy for the care and compassion they provided to Shirley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Indian Creek Nature Center.
