Shirley Ann Clay

Shirley Ann Clay, 84, of Mansfield, Ohio fell at the feet of her Saviour and entered into heavenly peace in the morning hours of March 15, 2022.

The daughter of Luther and Mary Litteral, Shirley was born on April 23, 1937 in South Portsmouth, Kentucky. Amidst the bucolic background of rural Kentucky in the World War II era, Shirley developed a love for the simpler things in life. A fresh snowfall, a cake hot out of the oven, the scent of a rose, freshly made cornbread and buttermilk: all of these could put a twinkle in her eye right up to the end.

Shirley will be remembered through the many selfless acts of kindness she bestowed on others, which if listed here in their entirety, would span several pages, and cost the lives of several trees to print…Her pie crusts, homemade quilts, ruthless euchre prowess, and infectious laughter will leave holes in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Clay; son, Michael Clay; grandson, Billy Clay; and her siblings, Ruth, Lorraine, Katherine, Paul, David, Junior, Barbara and Ralph.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sharon Scherrer; son, Greg Clay; sister, Dorothy Workman; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

What a reunion is taking place on Heaven’s shore today, and what a great reunion awaits all of us who, like Shirley, love deeply, forgive quickly, laugh regularly, spread kindness and love JESUS above all else.

A private graveside service will be held at Brick Union Cemetery in Greenup, Kentucky at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
