Samuel was born on Jan. 4, 1967, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Hugo Burdt and Elaine (Atkins) Burdt. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. On Dec. 18, 1992, Sam was united in marriage to the love of his life, Amy Schrobilgen, in Dubuque. They were blessed with three sons, Blair, Noah and Weston.

Sam was a loving husband, father, son, brother, friend, coach, official and so much more. Sam worked at Collins Aerospace for 13 years and was respected and highly regarded by many. Sam coached many of his boys’ sports teams as they grew up. He was always there for his boys and every kid on the team, whether it was baseball, basketball, football or some other event. Once his boys grew older, Sam began his officiating career. Sam thoroughly enjoyed his time as a football official, with the highlight of his officiating career being the side judge in the 2018 Stagg Bowl, DIII National Championship Game. Sam enjoyed family vacations to Door County, where many euchre games were played. Sam was also an avid sports fan with a profound love of baseball. He attended many Iowa sporting events and Cubs games. Sam would often stop by any high school baseball game he saw and watch for a while. Sam always knew how to make the most of every moment and enjoy life with family and friends. To know him was to love him.

Sam is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Amy Schrobilgen Burdt; three sons, Blair Samuel Burdt of Des Moines, Noah Charles Burdt of Cedar Rapids and Weston Ray Burdt of Cedar Rapids; mother, Elanie Atkins Burdt of Sun City, Ariz.; stepmother, Ruth Burdt of Cedar Rapids; two siblings, sister, Hallie (Greg) Thompson of Kansas City, and brother, Benjamin (Vera) Burdt of Kansas City; father and mother-in-law, Derald and Jean Schrobilgen; brothers and sisters-in-law, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hugo Burdt, in February 2020.
