Sally L. Kern, 85, of Kalona, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A Burial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond, with Father Bill Roush officiating. Burial will follow at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Historical Society.

Sally Lee (McGuire) Kern was born Jan. 21, 1937, in Iowa City, the daughter of Lee H. and Mary Alice (Holmes) McGuire. She graduated from Kalona High School in 1955 and was the homecoming queen. On June 7, 1958, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Larry Edward Kern, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Sally was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she taught CCD. She was very active in the Kalona community her whole life, working as one of the original tour guides for the Kalona Historical Society Tours, serving on the Kalona Historical Society board (two years as president), was a member of the Idris Club, worked at JW’s Grocery Store, and at the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce. Sally enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, watching the grandkids sporting events, visiting with people, playing cards and doing puzzles. She was an avid Hawkeyes fan.

Survivors include her husband, Larry of Kalona; two sons, Chris and Ruby (Eash) Kern and John Kern, both of Kalona; two grandsons who were her whole life, Travis (Whitney) Kern of West Des Moines and Jason (Betsy) Kern of Coralville; six great-grandchildren, Cameron, Quincy, Caroline, McKenzie, Kennedy and Carter; one brother, Steve (Sandy) McGuire; sister-in-law, Patty (Ron) Harland; and many nieces and nephews and many many friends.

Preceding Sally in death were her parents; father and mother-in-law, Edward and Ila (Grady) Kern; sister-in-law, Neia (Kern) and Dean Jackson; and two nephews, Kirk Jackson and Steve Harland.
