Sally Claire Myers, born on October 31, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Harold and Mary Sears, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, October 19, 2024.
She spent her early years in Des Moines, a place she always called home. Sally graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1945, where she was active in dance and tennis and was crowned homecoming queen in her senior year. She held dear memories of performing in dance recitals at Tanglefoot Cottage. After high school, Sally attended Monticello College in Missouri for her freshman year before transferring to the University of Iowa. She became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and, during her sophomore year, met the love of her life, Albert “Sug” Myers. They were married on June 19, 1947, and began their life together.
Their first home was above their small business in Iowa City, known as the Depot Lunch. After two years, they returned to Des Moines, where Sally embraced her role as a mother to their four children: Roxanne, Chuck, Tom, and Jon. Albert’s career took the family to several states, including Missouri, Kansas, Connecticut, and New York, before they ultimately returned to Iowa City in 1966.
Sally and Albert eventually settled in Dallas, Texas in 1973, where they lived until Albert’s passing in 1997. Following his death, Sally returned to Iowa City to be close to lifelong friends and family in both Iowa City and Des Moines.
During their years in Dallas, Sally became deeply involved in 12-step recovery programs. For over 25 years, she and Albert devoted themselves to traveling and sharing their experiences, strength, and hope with others in recovery. Sally continued this work after Albert’s passing, remaining an active and influential member of the recovery community until her death.
