Ruth Elaine Galyon, 90, of Springfield, went home to Jesus on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at her home. She was born on February 3, 1932, in Taylorville, the daughter of Lawrence “Ray” and Verda (Swift) Smith. She married Harry “Glen” Galyon on June 12, 1954 and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1988.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Leigh Ann Smith; and six sisters, Eloise Patterson, Raberta Neathery, Louise Ketchum, Mary May, Edna Alonzo, and Arlone Hogan.
Survivors include her son-in-law, Edward H. Smith (fiancée: Judy Smith) of Springfield; brother, Lawrence “Larry” Ray (Sue) Smith, Jr. of Naples, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Elaine worked as a private secretary for many years. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, where she worked in the church kitchen for 62 years. She served on the care ministry of the church and taught Sunday school and Bible School. She belonged to I.B.T. Sunday School Class for over 60 years and to the “Chicks Prayer Group” as well as Tuesday Morning Bible
Study for over 40 years. Her church was her life and she loved to serve Jesus.
Elaine volunteered at UIS Auditorium as an usher. She also volunteered at HSHS St. John’s Hospital as a Samaritan for ten years. She spent all of her life taking care of family and friends.
A private graveside service will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
