Roy Harold Hoyt

Roy Harold Hoyt was born April 10, 1938 in Belvidere, Illinois.  He passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023 at Mercy Walworth Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Hoyt, and mother, Eva Hoyt, sister Carol Vesley, and brother Ronald Hoyt.

Roy is survived by his wife Charlene, and six children, Mary Gunderson (Garry), William Hoyt (Susan), Cindy Kragenbrink, Anette Umland (Daniel), Ken Hoyt, and Diane Voirin (Maurice); seventeen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, sister, Clare Barnett (Art), and many nieces and nephews.

Roy was a nature lover and enjoyed hunting and fishing from his earliest days and even had a pet hawk. As a child, he went to work with his dad, who was a floor sander. He loved going with him and learned the trade as time went on. In 1957 he married Charlene McGuire in Woodstock, Illinois. They started out in Harvard and then moved to Whitewater, finally ending up in Fontana, Wisconsin where they spent the rest of their married life. Roy wore many hats over the years. He had numerous jobs; factory, work, refinishing boats, grinding feed, being a steeple jack, and many others, because after he mastered one, he would want a new challenge and move on. With his family he always worked hard and eventually was able to go full time back into sanding floors, which he loved. In his spare time, he spent many hours on Lake Geneva, and became very well known as a remarkable fisherman. He was also a talented woodworker and made exquisite bowls and jewelry boxes and things. He will most recently be remembered for the small crosses, called comfort crosses, which he spent hours making and thoroughly enjoyed giving to people. Often when he would see someone who looked like they could use a boost, he would give them one.  He loved hearing the beautiful stories people told him about something that had to do with their cross. He also took great pleasure in bringing balloons and a pump with him and as he and his wife shopped, he would keep his eyes open for children and he would make them a balloon animal, which would surprise and delight them. Roy was loved very much by his wife, his entire family, and many friends. Roy was a member of Saint Benedict’s Catholic Church in Fontana. Though he will be gone, he will be remembered with love. He brought many smiles to those he encountered. May God bless him always!

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 11 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 137 Dewey Ave., Fontana from 9:30 until the time of Mass at 11:00 AM, a luncheon will follow at church.  Burial will be later that day at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Hartland, Illinois.
