Roger Allen Simpson, MD, 96, died peacefully Wednesday, July 25, 2024.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Monday, July 29, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday from 9 AM to 10 AM at the Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Roger was born December 17, 1927 in Aurora, Illinois, the son of William and Nina (Spicer) Hickey.
He served in both the Army and the Navy during World War II. On September 16, 1946 Roger married Mary Hickey in Walla Walla, Washington.
Roger received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1949. In 1952, he received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Roger was an otolaryngologist specializing in head/neck surgery. He was on staff at Mercy Hospital and was an associate professor at the UI Department of Otolaryngology and Maxillo facial Surgery. He retired in 1995 after 38 years of service. For 21 years he was with Otologic Medical Services.
Roger was a member of the Johnson County Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Otolaryngology, serving as their Vice President in 1977.
Roger was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Iowa City Elks and the Rotary Club.
Roger is survived by his wife, Mary and their children, James (Becky) Simpson of Iowa City, Kathy Simpson of Loveland, CO, Jane (Robert) Schwab of Libertyville, IL, and Dr. Thomas (Beth) Simpson of Iowa City; Grandchildren, Sarah (Tom), Faith (David), Tim, Neil (Shannon), Andrew (Alex), Libby (Michael), Kelly, Kacee, Jay, Allen (Jennifer), and Grant; Great Grandchildren, Caleb, Fia, Elias, Rory, Luca, Clara, Claudia, Caliope, Bryce and Vivian.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Fredic MD, William, Richard, Robert and Donald; and sisters, Frances and Virginia.
