Robert “Bob” W. Potter, 75, of Marion, Iowa, passed from this life on Friday, August 16, 2024, at the St. Luke’s Transitional Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where a visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Bob was born on March 29, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, one of two sons to Ralph and Helen (Drake) Potter. He was a 1967 graduate of Marion High School and went on to attend Kirkwood Community College and Southern Illinois University, where Bob received his bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal (E-4) on February 27, 1975. On October 14, 1978, Bob was united in marriage to Denise Duffield in Princeton, Illinois. They made their home in Marion. He was employed as a Licensed Funeral Director with Murdoch Funeral Homes & Cremation Service since 1980. For more than 40 years, Bob was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. He was also a lifetime member of the Marion American Legion – Post 298, a member of the Trojan Lodge No. 548 AF and AM, The Cedar Rapids Consistory, the El Kahir Shrine, and the Hawkeye Bicycle Association of which Bob formerly served as President. He enjoyed listening to music and sailing, but most importantly, Bob loved spending time with his family. One of his greatest pleasures was spending time in Potterville, his home for most of his life, where many great memories were made. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bob is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Denise Potter; two daughters, Tina (Rand) McNeely and Stacy (Greg) Hanna; three grandchildren, Aubrey Hanna, Max McNeely, and Olivia Hanna; and his brother, Boyd (Barb) Potter of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s memory may be directed to St. Luke’s Healthcare Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
