Richard John “Hap” Hanssen passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Oldorf Hospice House, surrounded by his family.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2023, in the Oakwood Cemetery. A luncheon will be held following the service at United Church of Monticello. Richard was born at home, near Monticello, on April 23, 1937, to Henry and Martha Eggers, Hanssen. He graduated from the Monticello High School in May of 1955. He married the love of his life, Arlene Egger, on Aug. 3, 1955. They farmed near Scotch Grove until 1969. Richard then went to work at Cuckler Building until he retired in 2000. He and Arlene then worked at the Scotch Grove Nursery until it closed. Richard enjoyed playing golf, especially making a hole-in-one on No. 8 at the Monticello Golf Club. He was a member of the Scotch Grove Coon Hunters and the Scotch Grove Pinochle Club for 45 years.

Those that survive him are his wife, Arlene; two children, Doug Hanssen, Monticello, Pat (John) Slater, Olin; his siblings, Ann Dufner, Montana, Albert Hanssen, Monticello, Ben (Sharon) Hanssen, Muscatine; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Weber; and a brother, Robert Hanssen. Memorials may directed to the family.
